On a beau soutenir Ryan Murphy dans quasiment toutes ses entreprises, force est de constater que ses dernières saisons d’American Horror Story ne sont plus au niveau de ses premières créations. Elle semble bien loin désormais, l’époque où l’on attendait chaque nouvelle saison d’American Horror Story avec une impatience morbide, certaine qu’on aurait droit à une claque dans la gueule. Oui elle semble loin. Et c’est précisément parce qu’elle l’est. Loin de son âge d’or, et loin de ses pompes. Une petite série naissait sur FX Networks, qui mélangeait plusieurs intrigues dans une seule et même maison lugubre. Au générique, quelques violons désaccordés, un bruit de tronçonneuse, une rupture de tempo, 3 ou 4 chuintements accompagnaient tout une salve d’images atroces montées rapidement, qui ont découragé plus d’un téléspectateur. Pour les plus courageuses, un monde nouveau s’ouvrait celui d’American Horror Story, plein de fantômes, de monstres, de dents et de perversions. De contes, finalement. Cette première et très réussie saison, emmenée par Connie Britton, Dylan McDermott, Jessica Lange, Evan Peters et Denis O-hare a notamment servi de vivier aux créateurs du programme Brad Falchuk et Ryan Murphy pour constituer une seule et même équipe qui apparaitra dans quasiment toutes les saisons. Ainsi, c’est son casting qui a fait la première vraie force de American Horror Story et demeure la seule constante du programme anthologique. La saison 2 a également su éblouir son monde, jusque dans les ténèbres de l’hôpital psychiatrique de Briarcliff où grouillaient les pires démons de la planète. Si la troisième saison décevait un poil, accumulant clichés du genre et personnages grotesques, la 4è Freak Show est sans aucun doute un chef-d’œuvre, en cela qu’elle traite des tares humaines avec une finesse trop rare à la télévision. Ensuite malheureusement, c’est le drame. À l’exception de quelques saisons qui sortent leur épingle du jeu, le niveau baisse drastiquement, pour sombrer dans l’ubuesque. Pourtant, impossible pour nous de boycotter le programme, qui même lorsqu’il déçoit demeure notre série doudou… American Horror Story 10 nous sert du réchauffé Entendons-nous American Horror Story saison 10, dont les 3 premiers épisodes sont d’ores et déjà disponibles sur la plateforme MyCanal, n’a pas à rougir de sa production, bien sûr. Il ferait bon voir d’ailleurs, avec la team de talents exceptionnels qui chapeautent le programme. Seulement, elle sent le déjà-vu. À une exception près son format. En effet, cette saison se divise en deux moitiés et se nomme d’ailleurs Double Feature, en hommage au mode de diffusion des premiers films d’horreur dans les cinéma américains. Et les deux moitiés, si elles sont censées se rejoindre à un moment donné, racontent des histoires drastiquement différentes. Ainsi, AHS 10 est quasiment conçue comme deux séries distinctes. La première partie, celle qui est actuellement en cours de diffusion, se déroule à Provincetown, dans le Massachusetts, un bled paumé où tout le monde se connait et où le soleil ne pointe jamais le bout de son nez. Là, un écrivain en mal d’inspiration, sa femme enceinte et sa fille, s’installent dans une maison mi-stylée, mi-lugubre, non loin de la mer. Au bout de seulement quelques minutes de programme, une sorte de vampire encore un bordel, on y avait déjà eu droit dans la saison 5 ultra-caricatural croise la route de la petite famille — qui a tout naturellement décidé de se promener dans un cimetière — avant de la poursuivre jusque dans sa demeure. Vous vous en rendrez vite compte AHS 10 n’y va pas avec le dos de la cuillère et balance une nouvelle pièce à son intrigue ainsi qu’un nouveau personnage toutes les 3 minutes. Bref, la saison n’a pas le time, et nous fatigue de par son rythme quasi-épiléptique. Difficile de prime à bord de ne pas rouler des yeux exaspérés, tant Ryan Murpy et consorts nous avaient, dans leurs premières saisons, habituée à des ouvertures plus originales qu’à une course-poursuite maman enceinte/créature sanguinaire. Mais bon, soit. Le problème principal de ces premiers épisodes, c’est avant tout que les desseins des personnages sont présentés immédiatement, sans laisser autour d’eux planer le moindre mystère ni la moindre ambiguïté, dont on sait pourtant qu’ils sont d’excellents — voire d’indispensables — facteurs de peur. On vous défie de trembler une seconde devant les trois premiers épisodes du programme, qui non contents de nous servir du réchauffé, ne semblent pas s’amuser avec les codes dont ils usent et abusent ! Ainsi les créatures présentées sont convenues, aussi bien dans leur apparence physique que dans les desseins qu’ils souhaitent accomplir. Attention, on comprend bien que le propre du programme de Ryan Murphy est de reprendre les grands classiques de l’horreur, mais dans ses premières saisons, il parvenait justement à s’en saisir pour les mieux les distordre et les rendre déviants. Là était sa patte. Là résidait notre plaisir. Dans cette 10ème saison, un vampire est un gars recouvert de poudre blanche, qui vit dans une grosse baraque, fait n’imp de sa vie, et pourrit la celle des autres. Bon, vraiment rien de nouveau sous le soleil. On a déjà vu Twilight. Un hommage à Shining ? Heureusement, derrière American Horror Story, se cachent des auteurs talentueux, qui même lorsqu’ils déçoivent SAVENT faire du divertissement. Ainsi tout n’est évidemment pas à jeter dans AHS 10, et surtout pas son postulat de départ. Car, même s’il est redondant dans la littérature et la cinématographie contemporaines, on est toujours assez fan de l’auteur en mal d’inspiration qui sombre dans la folie… D’ailleurs, ce poncif » a donné à voir quelques uns des meilleurs films d’horreur de l’histoire du cinéma, comme Shining de Stanley Kubrick ou le plus confidentiel et encore plus barré L’antre de la folie, de John Carpenter. D’ailleurs, Finn Wittock, qui incarne le héros Harry Gardner a expliqué à Entertainment Weekly s’être inspiré du film pour donner de l’ampleur à son personnage The Shining est l’un de mes films préférés de tous les temps donc il est toujours dans mon esprit. J’y pensais évidemment en préparant cette saison.
